That ”It’s a Girl!” Moment, 1954

The year was 1954, and the few pieces of technology available included color telephone sets and medical and scientific inventions. While medical science was just evolving, scientists had just developed a way to determine the gender of a child, and Jane Dill was one of the first to experience the joy.

Being a mother is something to be proud of, and this lab in Northbrook, Illinois, took pleasure in giving mothers the news. From this picture taken by photographer Wallace Kirkland just after Dill was told that her baby was a girl, you can tell that she couldn’t hide her excitement.
