The Stories Behind the Most Surreal Pictures Throughout History
Charlton Heston and Linda Harrison in a Scene From the Film “Planet of the Apes” in 1968
When Charles Heston was first sent a copy of the “Planet of the Apes” novel, he was not impressed. However, he thought it would make an interesting film and came on board. During a large part of filming, Heston was sick with the flu; his voice was gritty and hoarse. The producers thought that it added a nice touch to his character and decided to continue on with it.
Linda Harrison was brought on board to play Nova. During filming she had an affair with the producer Richard D. Zanuck; he left his wife and later married Harrison. The movie was a huge success and inspired several remakes and sequels. Both Harrison and Heston also starred in the 2001 “Planet of the Apes.”
