The Cruel History of the Treadmill

While marketed first as a healthcare device in the 20th century, treadmills have a long history. They were first used in prisons, after being invented by Sir William Cubitt in 1817. A wheel-like device then; they were a cruel piece of technology that functioned when convicts lifted their feet to run them to power mills.

Convicts hung on to a bar as they worked eight-hour shifts a day. These contraptions were particularly present in England. Though they were introduced in America, they did not catch on. Treadmills finally caught on as cardio machines and became popular in America in the late ‘60s after being modified by civil engineer William Staub.
