Elephant Digs A Hole For Hours And Pulled A Shocking Thing Out That Surprised Everyone!
Some people may think of elephants as dumb animals, but they are anything but this. In fact, they are one of the most intuitive animals in the world and are known for being able to express their emotions and for being intuitive as well as extremely intelligent.
In India, elephants are seen as animals of divinity and royalty. So when one started digging a hole in a field in the northeastern end of the country, people took note. But what was it up to, what was it looking for, and most pertinently, what would it eventually pull up? Find out as you read on…
A Huge Herd Moving In
In India, it’s not uncommon to see herds of elephants moving around. On a fateful day in question, around 60 of the majestic creatures were seen moving on a road in eastern India. This was in 2015, when the rainy season was in full swing in India.
Besides elephants, forests in this high-altitude area or also renowned for other animals. These include big cats like the fishing cat, marbled cat, golden leopard cat, and the Royal Bengal Tiger. But the elephant is more revered than all of them in this area, and they were being admired by everyone they passed. Then locals noticed something strange.
One Stood Out
This was in the Chatra district, which was roughly 100 miles from Ranchi, the Jharkhand state capital district. It’s best known as the City of Waterfalls, and elephants make an annual journey through the area. Elephants are renowned for sticking to a routine and sticking together. So this elephant leaving his herd was unusual to the locals.
The elephants in this area were renowned for not being fearful of any of the other animals in the forest; those animals couldn’t harm them. But they feared people with a history of harming these majestic animals. Was this elephant in distress because of the people around it?
Showcasing Abnormal Behavior
While the rest of the elephant herd moved along, this elephant stayed behind and started digging a hole. No one around knew exactly what it was on about. But the female elephant appeared to be searching for something underground. What could it possibly have been? Not even the locals could figure it out.
Elephants are renowned for digging for water, and it’s not uncommon for them to dig up anything from two gallons. They normally draw this up with their trunks and also gain much-needed mineral benefits from the groundwater. But this elephant was not digging for water, because the act had gone on for hours.
Starting To Attract Attention
More and more people started coming to the scene as the hours passed by. The funny thing is that normally elephants stick together, but this one’s herd appeared to leave her behind as if her struggle wasn’t there either. The people found this strange because normally elephants don’t stay away from their herds very long.
But this female wasn’t even caught up about being left behind and was becoming increasingly frantic about her digging efforts too. Was the elephant just desperately thirsty, or was there something else wrong here? This is what was leaving even experts among the villagers perplexed.
Pretty Shocking for Everyone
The only separation there is in an elephant herd is between males and females. Females, known as cows, live in their own little herds. Male elephants are called bulls. Live in what is called bachelor herds among other bulls. None of that mattered in this instance though.
This female continued to dig like crazy yet didn’t appear to find what she was looking for. The locals looked on in fascination, and she continued to dig. Females are the leaders of herds and are usually responsible for taking care of the young and for finding food. It couldn’t be food she was after could it?
