Maximize Your Benefits With These Health Screening Medicare Covers

Medicare doesn’t just help pay your doctor bills. It also gives you free or low-cost health screenings that catch problems early. If you are 65 or older or have certain conditions, Medicare can help you stay ahead of serious illness without emptying your wallet.
These screenings are tools to keep you feeling good longer:
Cardiovascular Screenings
Medicare covers a cholesterol test every five years. That includes lipid and triglyceride levels. It may not sound exciting, but these numbers say a lot about your heart’s future.
Even if you feel fine, high cholesterol can be a silent threat. Catching it early means you can make changes before it turns into something worse, like a heart attack or stroke. Don’t wait for symptoms to take action.
Cancer Screenings
Colorectal cancer is sneaky. Medicare gives you access to regular colonoscopies or fecal tests, depending on your risk. High-risk folks get tested every two years. Others get checked every four years. If you are 45 or older, you are likely eligible.

Cotton Bro / Pexels / For women 40 and older, Medicare covers a mammogram every year. It can catch breast cancer early when it is easiest to treat.
And for men 50 and up, there is a yearly PSA test for prostate cancer. These simple tests could be the thing that gives you more years with your family.
Diabetes Screenings
Medicare covers blood sugar screenings for people with risk factors like obesity, high blood pressure, or family history. You can get tested twice a year if you are considered high-risk.
And if your BMI is 30 or more, you also qualify for obesity counseling. That means someone to help guide you toward better habits, not just a number on a chart. Managing diabetes starts with knowing you have it.
Bone Density (Osteoporosis) Tests
Osteoporosis doesn’t hurt, until it does. One fall can lead to months of recovery. Medicare pays for a bone density test every two years for women at risk. That includes women with low estrogen, certain hormone conditions, or who use steroids regularly.
This screening can tell you if your bones are getting weaker before you ever feel a thing. With that info, your doctor can help you build strength and avoid dangerous fractures.
Mental Health & Substance Abuse Screenings
Medicare knows mental health is not a side issue. That is why it covers a yearly depression screening in your primary care clinic. It is part of your wellness visit, and it can be the first step in feeling like yourself again.

Freepik / Medicare covers up to four counseling sessions a year for alcohol misuse.
These chats are private, simple, and focused on helping you heal.
How to Make the Most of These Benefits?
Start with your “Welcome to Medicare” visit. You only get one. So, don’t miss it. Then book your yearly wellness visits to keep access to all these screenings open. These appointments are the gateway to every test mentioned here.
Talk to your doctor like a teammate. Bring up your family history and any changes in your body or mood. Medicare gives you the tools, but it is up to you to put them to work.
Screenings only help if you take them. They cost little or nothing with Medicare Part B, but skipping them can cost you big later. Time off work, hospital stays, or long-term meds could follow if something gets missed.
Use your plan the smart way. Mark your calendar, ask questions, and follow up on test results.
