The Stories Behind the Most Surreal Pictures Throughout History
“The Veiled Christ,” Created in 1753 by Giuseppe Sanmartino From a Single Block of Marble
The task of making a sculpture dedicated to Jesus Christ was originally assigned to Antonio Corrideni, who was known for his proficiency with veiled structures. However, he passed away shortly after having made only a rough draft. The task was then taken over by Giuseppe Sanmartino, who made such a surreal sculpture that it was widely believed that it wasn’t made completely of marble.
Legends said that it was a miracle of alchemy, the cloth on the original sculpture has been transformed into marble by the chemical process. But analysis shows that it is really marble. The sculpture shows Christ in a pained expression, a reference to his crucifixion with a crown of thorns at his feet.
